Gospel Reading

Now it happened that Jesus was in a certain place praying, and when He had finished, one of his disciples said, 'Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.'
He said to them, 'When you pray, this is what to say: Father, may your name be held holy, your kingdom come; give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive each one who is in debt to us. And do not put us to the test.'

Reflection

Will to Love and Forgive

We often hear about the efforts of the big and powerful nations of the world to bring about a new world order. A peaceful and prosperous world – that is the dream of all. But their efforts often fail to produce the desired results, because the means employed to stop violence and create peace is again violence. It is not possible to establish peace by external, physical force. Only love and mercy can win conclusively over hatred and enmity, not violence and terror.

Jesus’ teaching about peace is closely connected with his vision of the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God proclaimed by Jesus is founded on humanness, on the typical human qualities of freedom, equality, reconciliation, mercy, love and joy. It is realized through the strengthening of human relationships. The entire gospel teaching contains the ways and means to be realized the kingdom of God in our daily life, so that it does not remain merely an ideal but become a reality, an experience.

The prayer “Our Father” which our Lord has taught us imparts this experience of relationship between God and humanity and the human beings among themselves. Trust in divine Providence, forgiveness and reconciliation and resistance to evil temptations are basic attitudes which are necessary to build up a human society in harmony and peace. When this prayer is recited, God will manifest himself as the Father of all. The entire humanity will be united in a family bond as brothers and sisters. The transformation of society is effected through the re-establishing of the broken bonds of humanity.

The story of the impatient and angry Jonah is very beautifully narrated to show that it is God’s will to love and forgive. His justice is shown in his infinite mercy. The picture of an infinitely merciful God is drawn against the background of the vengeful attitude of Jonah. Mercy is the blood that flows in the sinews of God. Being children of God we are also supposed to inherit this divine attitude, as we receive the Eucharistic body and blood of Christ. Let us be merciful and become worthy children of our Father in heaven.
