Gospel  Lk 10:1-12

Gospel Reading

Jesus appointed seventy-two other disciples whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way. Into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this household.' If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another. Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you, cure the sick in it and say to them, 'The Kingdom of God is at hand for you.' Whatever town you enter and they do not receive you, go out into the streets and say, 'The dust of your town that clings to our feet, even that we shake off against you.' Yet know this: the Kingdom of God is at hand. I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day than for that town."

Kingdom: A Mood Changer

When the exams come near, the mood of the life of the students changes. They are no more in a mood to go out for a movie, or watch T.V, or spend more time for cricket and so on.

Jesus is giving a mood-changer to us. It is the thought of approaching Kingdom of God. This thought of the nearness of the Kingdom of God can alter the mood with which we live our daily life.

The Israelites had been taken in captivity to Babylon. Later a group of them were allowed to return under the leadership of Ezra-Nehemiah to re-build the Jerusalem temple and city walls. It gave them the hope that they will get freedom in near future and the rule of their King Yahweh would be established. It made them happy (Neh 8:12).  And in the Gospel we see how Jesus chose seventy two and send them to preach. He cautioned them that there may be people who welcome them and those who do not welcome them. But to both of them what they must preach is that the Kingdom of God is near (Lk 10:9, 11).

The thought of approaching Kingdom can have three fold effects in our lives;

At first, it will change our mood in relating with God, because his Kingdom is going to be established. Secondly, it will change our mood in relating with our brothers and sisters. Since we are ruled by God who is love and merciful, love becomes the rule of the day. Thirdly, it will help us to relate with the nature around us. Instead of exploiting the nature, we will preserve the nature as it is the abode of God, our King.

Thought of approaching Kingdom will change the mood of our daily life.
