Gospel Reading

Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay each according to his conduct. Amen, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.”

Disciples Are Witnesses Jesus invites you and me to be disciples, to take up the cross and follow him. It is a risky invitation to accept because it means living in the tension of hearing ourselves make the great confession "Jesus, you’re the Messiah!" one minute and hearing Jesus rebuke us with the words, "Get behind me, Satan!" the next.

Taking the way of the cross is a real, agonizing process, a task so overwhelming that eventually there is no choice anymore. The only decision is to follow.

Reflection

To be a follower of Jesus means to surrender oneself totally to God and be ready to follow Jesus in every aspect of the Servant role, even to carrying a cross.

Discipleship is not about you or me; it’s about God, which is what Jesus means by the language of denying ourselves.  Often we plan things and execute them as if we are called to follow our own pans.  We are asked to deny ourselves, our plans, our visions and to accept the vision of Jesus.  We have to look at Jesus and listen to him.  Disciples are witnesses, speaking what they hear and see in Jesus.

Jesus prayed that he be able to follow not his will, but Fathers will. Fulfilling the fathers will require carrying the cross.  Today is our turn to commit ourselves to fulfill God’s will which invariably requires carrying the crosses. The way of the cross is the way of faith, love and hope.
