Gospel Reading

Children were brought to Jesus that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked them, but Jesus said, "Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." After he placed his hands on them, he went away.

Reflection

Recognize Every Little Gift of Life

Yuvaraj Singh, the popular Indian cricketer, is more known and acclaimed today for the fight he led against the cancer in his lungs than against the rival teams on the Cricket grounds. The story of his fight against cancer and his subsequent, miraculous return to international cricket continues to be told and savoured to this day. A few months back, there appeared in a newspaper an interview with Yuvraj after he returned from the hospital in London. One of the questions asked was if there was any difference between the Yuvraj before the cancer episode and the Yuvraj after the cancer episode. Asserting that there was a huge difference, he revealed that earlier his concerns and dreams and passions revolved around money, fame, international exposure, fun, popularity, etc. But today … ‘But now the first thing I do after waking up from sleep is to take a long breath to see if I can breathe effortlessly. And when I see I can, I thank God for that beautiful gift!’

The adults are generally nostalgic about their long gone childhood. Children are lot happier and more contended than the adults. It is because even the smallest thing that the adults pass by unnoticed and take for granted is for them a wonderful gift and source of mystery and wonder. When did we last take notice of our breathing? ... and so the many other small and big beautiful mysteries of our life? ‘Let the children come to me. To such belongs the Kingdom of God.’ Yes, the Kingdom belongs to those who can recognize every little gift, about them, and around them and be happy and grateful about it.
