Saturday of the 14th Week in Ordinary Time

July 13, 2019

Gen 49:29-32; 50:15-26a

Ps 105:1-2, 3-4, 6-7

Mt 10:24-33

Jesus said to his Apostles: “No disciple is above his teacher, no slave above his master. It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, for the slave that he become like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more those of his household! “Therefore do not be afraid of them. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.”

Reflection

Jesus continues to tell us that if they had persecuted him by putting him to death on the cross, we cannot expect much less either. Standing for Jesus and proclaiming his message are risky occupations. Jesus throws a challenge before us. Do not be worried about those who kill the body but not the soul, but worry about the one who can do away with both body and soul. We are all concerned about body very much. If we should fall sick we get the proper treatment for its better health. But what about the health of our soul.  Are we concerned about it and take any measure for restoring the fitness level of the soul? His point is that if by proclaiming his message one gets done away with, do not be worried. Here one is losing only his body but his soul is ever assured of eternal life. So why not take this risk.

He goes on to assure us that our lives are of great value. We read in Is: 43 /4 “Because you are precious in my eyes, because you are honoured and I love you I give men in exchange for you, people in return for your life”. He says even our hair has been numbered and are being taken care of and we shall not be done away with, without his knowledge and will. Thus he gives us enough strength and courage to pull on with his mission and message.

Jesus wants us to understand what kind of welcome would be awaiting us when we reach God’s presence after our passage from this life. He says if we are reluctant to acknowledge him before the men, he will also be so in front of his angels. On the other hand if we are going to be enthusiastic to accept Jesus before men, then we can too expect the same from him in front of his angels in heaven.

So we can decide what kind of welcome we should have once we leave this planet for heavenly abode.
