Saturday of the Second Week of Easter

1 Corinthians 15:1-8 ;

Psalm 19:2-5;

Gospel JN 6:16-21

When it was evening, the disciples of Jesus went down to the sea,
embarked in a boat, and went across the sea to Capernaum.
It had already grown dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.
The sea was stirred up because a strong wind was blowing.
When they had rowed about three or four miles,
they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat,
and they began to be afraid.
But he said to them, "It is I. Do not be afraid."
They wanted to take him into the boat,
but the boat immediately arrived at the shore
to which they were heading.

The Way, the Truth and the Life

Albert Einstein was once travelling from New York to another city in a train.  On the way he noticed the ticket checker coming down the aisle punching the tickets of all passengers.  So Einstein searched for his ticket and that was missing.  He checked his wallet, his trouser pockets, his shirt, and his brief case.  The ticket was not to be found.  He was on four legs searching for his ticket under his seat.  The ticket checker noticed this and says to Einstein, “Mr. Einstein, we all know who you are.  You don’t need a ticket.” Einstein replies, “Young man, I too know who I am, but I don’t know where I am going.” Do you know where you are going?

In developed countries like the USA, the use of a GPS by drivers is very common.  And the GPSs work in most cases.  But if you want to reach your final destination you will need Jesus who is the best road map we can ever think of, because he says, “I am the way, the truth and the life.”  Jesus is not just showing us the way.  He is the way.

There are thousands of religions in the world and thousands of Christian denominations too.  Which one is the right one, the real way?  Saying “all religions are equal” insults thoughtful followers of every religion. It is easy to say, “All roads leads to heaven” when you haven’t studied the map carefully.  What we need is an accurate road map that tells us which road leads to heaven.  Find that road and you will end up in the right place. Some years ago the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches was asked to name the theological issue facing Christians worldwide.  His answer was unequivocal: “The uniqueness of Christ.”

If Jesus is not unique, there is no gospel and we have no good news to preach to the world.   For us, as for the apostles, he is the way, the truth and the life.  By sticking close to Jesus we will not lose our way.  We won’t be deceived by Jesus because he always speaks the truth.  And we never have to fear death if we choose to be united to Jesus who is the life.
