Thursday of the Fourth Week of Easter

Acts 13:13-25 ;

 Psalm 89:2-3, 21-22, 25, 27; J

Gospel JN 13:16-20

When Jesus had washed the disciples' feet, he said to them:
"Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master
nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him.
If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it.
I am not speaking of all of you.
I know those whom I have chosen.
But so that the Scripture might be fulfilled,
The one who ate my food has raised his heel against me.
From now on I am telling you before it happens,
so that when it happens you may believe that I AM.
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send
receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me."

Interpretations and Evaluations

There are two ways to understand and evaluate history: first, based on conspicuous, outstanding events; second, based on the undercurrents and the causative factors. The most prevalent evaluation method is based on conspicuous outstanding events. To make the second type of evaluation one needs more intelligence, patience and wisdom, which are rare qualities. We come across such evaluations only once in a blue moon. In today’s first reading we heard the interpretation and evaluation of the Salvation History carried out by Paul at the invitation of the officials of the synagogue. In a few sentences Paul summarized and explained the whole of salvation history to his listeners. His interpretation belongs to the second type of evaluation I mentioned above, where the conspicuous and outstanding events are not that crucial. He was underlining the causative factor and the undercurrents that gave rise to those events and persons.

If you throw a stone at a dog or flog a dog it has a natural tendency to chase that stone or bite that stick, because it thinks that it is the stone or the stick that caused the pain. It fails to see the hands that throw the stone or holds the stick. Though we pretend that we are superior to dogs, in reality we are not much different. We too often see only the immediate. We fail to notice the causative factors and the one who stands behind the events and persons, who torment us. If we could look through the shoulders of the persons and events, and observe the one, who stands behind them, our attitude and approach towards life and people will undergo a radical transformation. Unfortunately people are too short-sighted to see anything beyond the immediate. That is why the human history books are so primitive and our evaluations often too shallow. If the metamorphosis ever happens in our life then as Jesus promised us in today’s gospel “when it happens you will know that I AM”.
