Wednesday of the 4th Week of Easter

Acts 12:24, 13:15

Ps 66: 2-3, 5-6, 8

Gospel JN 12:44-50

Jesus cried out and said,
“Whoever believes in me believes not only in me
but also in the one who sent me,
and whoever sees me sees the one who sent me.
I came into the world as light,
so that everyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness.
And if anyone hears my words and does not observe them,
I do not condemn him,
for I did not come to condemn the world but to save the world.
Whoever rejects me and does not accept my words
has something to judge him: the word that I spoke,
it will condemn him on the last day,
because I did not speak on my own,
but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and speak.
And I know that his commandment is eternal life.
So what I say, I say as the Father told me.”

Increase My Faith, Lord

The gospel of John is divided into two parts: (i) The Book of Signs (chapters 1-12); and (ii) The Book of Glory (chapters 13-21). Today’s gospel presents to us the last part of the Book of Signs. Here Jesus is teaching the people publicly for the last time. From now on he will be instructing his disciples privately. This is a summary discourse of his public ministry which summarizes the important themes of his ministry. The passage specifically speaks about what Jesus did, what the audiences were supposed to do and what would be the future consequences.

Jesus taught them that he is united to the Father and he and his Father are one. He revealed the Father and made him known to them through his life, teachings and actions. He explicitly stated that the one who sees him sees the Father.  To believe in him is to believe in his Father. To listen to him is to listen to the Father. In short Jesus affirmed that he is God’s Son commissioned to speak and act with authority form the Father. If one follows his instructions he will be saved.  Otherwise he will be condemned.

The Jews did not believe in Jesus even though he worked many signs in their midst. Hence the text once again invites them to make a decision of faith. It tells them that if they put their trust in Jesus they will be saved. If not they will be inviting judgment and condemnation.

Hence the consequence of belief is salvation and eternal life and that of unbelief is judgment and condemnation. “Faith makes great burdens light; unbelief makes light burdens heavy”. “Faith lifts us up when we are down, but unbelief throws us down when we are up”. “Faith brings us near to God when we are far from him; unbelief puts us far from God when we are near to him”.

Let us have faith in Jesus and cast out our unbelief. “Faith purifies the heart. Unbelief keeps the heart impure”. Let us pray: Lord, increase my faith. Lord, forgive my unbelief.
