Wednesday of the 7th Week of the Ordinary Time

Sir 4:12-22

Ps 118:165, 168, 171-172, 174-175

Gospel MK 9:38-40

John said to Jesus,
"Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name,
and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us."
Jesus replied, "Do not prevent him.
There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name
who can at the same time speak ill of me.
For whoever is not against us is for us."

Exclusive and Inclusive Behaviour

My friend priest is an active missionary among the Non Christians in North India. He is well known for his revolutionary thoughts. Once during a discussion he asked, “Jesus has asked us to heal the sick. As missionaries can we heal all, including the non Christians?” I said, “Of course, we should. It is a responsibility entrusted to us.” He asked again whether we should heal their mental wounds. That too I said “Yes.” “What about their spiritual wounds? If they have committed any sin and are repenting and are ready to do proper penance, can we heal them forgiving their sins?” I was silent.

Very often we are exclusive in our actions. From prehistoric times onwards in the human behaviour we see these kinds of exclusive behaviours in the name of tribe, religion, cast, region, language etc. It would have its social or religious reasons.

A similar kind of behaviour we see in the question of the disciples when they ask Jesus- Is it right that someone who is not in our group is working miracles in your name. Shall we stop him? Jesus’ attitude was always inclusive. He did not exclude sinners or tax collectors, who were in a way excluded or marginalised from the community, from his company. He sat with them, ate with them and walked with them.

Jesus asks the disciples not to forbid him and asks them to consider ‘whoever is not against us is for us.’
