Tuesday of the 7th Week of the Ordinary Time

Sir 2:1-13

Ps 36:3-4, 18-19, 27-28, 39-40

Gospel MK 9:30-37

Jesus and his disciples left from there and began a journey through Galilee, but he did not wish anyone to know about it. He was teaching his disciples and telling them, "The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise." But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him.

They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house, he began to ask them, "What were you arguing about on the way?"  But they remained silent. For  they had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest.

Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all."
Taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them, "Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me."

 Servant of All

In the early days of her work when Mother Teresa was not well known to the world she once asked a baker for some bread to feed the hungry children in her orphanage. The baker was furious with her request, not only did he turn her down but he spat on her hand. But Mother Teresa gently told him, I would keep this for me, but give me some bread for my children while extending her another hand. On that spot, the bakery man realized Mother Teresa’s greatness and became a main bread donor for her orphanage. About Mother Teresa, then prime minister of India Mrs Indira Gandhi told, “In front of this great religious woman I realize how small and I am.”

The disciples of Jesus were arguing who was the greatest among them. That too, when Jesus was telling them how he was going to suffer and die. They did not care. They did not even try to understand about his suffering and death. When we are thinking only about ourselves, our own importance we don’t care about others, we don’t understand the pain and sufferings of other people. Jesus advises them to come out of their egocentric life to the service of others.”If someone wants to be first, let him be last of all and servant of all.” He himself set examples before them. St Paul says, “Your attitude should be same as that of Christ Jesus, who, being in the very nature of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of the servant.” (Phil 2: 5-6)
