Thursday of the 6th Week in Ordinary Time

Gen 9:1-13

Ps 101: 16-23, 29

Gospel MK 8:27-33

Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” They said in reply, “John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets.” And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said to him in reply, “You are the Christ.”

Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him.

He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples,
rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”

The Messianic Confession of Peter

The entire section of Mark Chapter 8: 27 to Chapter 10: 52 is cast into the frame work of a journey.  Jesus and the disciples are on the way from Bethsaida(8: 22) to Caesarea Philippi. On this journey Jesus asks the question to his disciples, “Who do people say that I am “(8: 27). After that Jesus asked his disciples about their own experience/opinion about him, “but what do you say that I am” (8: 29). Peter answers clearly and decisively, “You are the Messiah”.

The biblical figures as well as the saints in Catholic tradition throughout the ages responded to this question of Jesus when they had in-depth Christ experience.

•         Thomas said, “My God and My Lord” (John 20: 28)

•         Paul acclaimed, “It is no longer I who live but it is Christ who lives in me” (Gal 2: 20). “For me to live is Christ and death gain”. “Who can separate me from the Love of Christ” (Rom. 8: 35)

•         Francis Assisi said, “My God my All”

•       John of the Cross, “To suffer and to be despised for you”

•       Theresa of Avila had two mottos motivated by the sufferings of Jesus, “Lord, either let me suffer or let me die” – The second one, “Nada te tabe to espante,  solo Dios basta”- “Let nothing worry you, nothing dismay you, God alone is enough”.

What is my experience of Christ? What is my perception of the identity of Christ for my daily life? Is the cross an essential aspect of my Christ image? Jesus is asking you “Who do you say that I am”? What would be your answer?
