Tuesday of the 6th Week in Ordinary Time

Gen 6:5-8: 7:1-5, 10

Ps 28: 1-4, 9-10

Gospel MK 8:14-21

The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. Jesus enjoined them, “Watch out, guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”

They concluded among themselves that it was because they had no bread. When he became aware of this he said to them, “Why do you conclude that it is because you have no bread? Do you not yet understand or comprehend? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes and not see, ears and not hear? And do you not remember, when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many wicker baskets full of fragments you picked up?” They answered him, “Twelve.” “When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many full baskets of fragments did you pick up?” They answered him, “Seven.” He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”

The Yeast of the Pharisees

Reflection: The Pharisees were unable to see the truth that Jesus was the Messiah. Their blindness was so deep that they refused to see him as God sent person and they also actively sought to suppress his claims as the Messiah. That was the yeast of the Pharisees.

Herod’s yeast was different. Herod loved the world, wealth, power and pleasure. It leads the people to the hostility towards God, and blindness towards grace and truth that we find in Jesus Yeast is a rising agent. When it added to bread it works through the entire dough and influences the whole lump. When the dough is baked the whole loaf rises uniformly. The application of yeast in Jesus teaching is the same. The Pharisees’ or Herod’s yeast is damaging. Their hypocrisy and self-indulgences may cause you to become like that. So keep a distance. Like them you also rise in pride and will be unable to see spiritual realities that happen in front of you which will enable to darsan (vision) of God. So open your eyes and see the miracles that are happening in front of your eyes (v. 17-18) “Having eyes do you not see and having ears do you not hear? Once a Catholic priest was travelling in a crowded bus and his mind was disturbed. The bus was carrying many devotees of Swami Ayyappa to the mount Sabari in Kottayam District, in Kerala. The priest noticed that the conductor in the bus was extremely polite and kind to the passengers and arranging all possible ways to have seats to the devotees. Meanwhile of the Ayyappa devotees vomited. Immediately the conductor rushed to him to care him and to do the needed help. The priest was so taken up seeing the compassionate heart of the conductor. He wanted to touch his feet since he had already got a glimpse of God’s presence in the conductor. He was waiting for a chance. As he was getting down from the bus the conductor was standing at the gate and the priest touched the feet and went away without looking back! Open your eyes and see the miracles around you and your mind will be calm.
