Thursday of the 5th Week in the Ordinary Time

 Gen 2: 18-25

Gospel MK 7:24-30

Jesus went to the district of Tyre.
He entered a house and wanted no one to know about it,
but he could not escape notice.
Soon a woman whose daughter had an unclean spirit heard about him.
She came and fell at his feet.
The woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by birth,
and she begged him to drive the demon out of her daughter.
He said to her, “Let the children be fed first.
For it is not right to take the food of the children
and throw it to the dogs.”
She replied and said to him,
“Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s scraps.”
Then he said to her, “For saying this, you may go.
The demon has gone out of your daughter.”
When the woman went home, she found the child lying in bed
and the demon gone.

Tested by Fire Jesus appreciated and rewarded the faith of the Syro-Phoenician woman. Is it because her faith is stronger, more mature or more sincere than others? It is great because of the obstacles that she overcame to display it. As we will see “great” faith is often tested and hammered out on the anvil of difficulty. In the first letter of Peter we read, “..now for a little while you may have to suffer various trails, so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold which though is perishable is tested by fire, may redound to to praise and glory and honour” (1Pet 1:6-7) We see a growth of faith in her. First she acted out of desperation. Her daughter had an unclean spirit harassing her. She would have tried all the possible treatments and were all unsuccessful. Out of desperation she came to Jesus. Then she heard about Jesus. She had faith in him and she acted on her faith. She was discouraged.

First, she is discouraged by the Lord’s silence.

Secondly, she is discouraged by the annoyance of the Disciples. We see the detailed description of the story in Mt 15; 21-28.

Thirdly, she is discouraged by the Lord’s Words. Jesus appears disinterested and insulting in his conversation with the woman. But the woman immediately responds with faith. We see the demonstration of faith and the great faith being rewarded.

She began  with request and ended on her knees in prayer. This woman had “great faith” because she endured the test sent to her from Heaven. She did not collapse, quit, give up or faint because of the hardships. She pressed on until the Lord granted her request. Are you passing through a humbling trial? If Heaven seems silent, or if your prayers appear to be unanswered, maybe it is a test. There is always a possibility of a “yes” where He has not answered “No”.
