Wednesday of the 5th Week in the Ordinary Time

Gen 2: 4b-9, 15-17

Gospel MK 7:14-23

Jesus summoned the crowd again and said to them,“Hear me, all of you, and understand.Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person;but the things that come out from within are what defile.”

When he got home away from the crowdhis disciples questioned him about the parable. He said to them,“Are even you likewise without understanding?Do you not realize that everythingthat goes into a person from outside cannot defile, since it enters not the heart but the stomachand passes out into the latrine?”(Thus he declared all foods clean.)“But what comes out of the man, that is what defiles him. From within the man, from his heart, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile.”

What Comes from Inside

The missionaries working in China were holding an evaluation meeting. They brought about the subject of difficult situations and persecutions they are facing. Without discussing much on that topic their superior struck strongly on the table. Water from the glasses placed on the table sprayed out. Then he continued, “Whenever difficulties or persecutions you may face, as the water came out of the glass only what is inside will come out of you. If your hearts are filled with goodness and love, only goodness and love will come out at the time of difficulties. That is enough to be witnessing Christ.” Jesus said, “Nothing that goes from outside can make a person unclean, but what comes from inside makes a person impure.”

The leaders and priest came all the way from Jerusalem to catch him. Not out of love for God nor out of love for God’s law, but because of hatred for him, because he was getting more followers than them. Since they could not find any fault with him they started to observe his followers and they could find some which in the strict sense could be interpreted as breaking of the law.

He did not say that law is not good. He did not abolish law. He implied that law can be used in such a way that it kills and makes human life impossible. Earlier, before the Supreme Court strictly warned not to harass those who helped the accident victim very few people stopped at the accident site to help the victims. In the vision of Jesus law should be interpreted from the point of love.
