Thursday of the 3rd Week in the Ordinary Time

Hebrews 10:19-25 ;

 Psalm 24:1-6;

Gospel MK 4:21-25

Jesus said to his disciples, "Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand? For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible; nothing is secret except to come to light. Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear." He also told them, "Take care what you hear. The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you, and still more will be given to you. To the one who has, more will be given;  from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away."

Light and Darkness

Jesus is the light of the world and no one who walks in Jesus will walk in the dark, but live in the light of life (Jn 8:12). Since his appearance, the Christian west was moulded in his light; however, there is a subversive force at work all over the world to put this light out. The recent attempt to bring down the picture of Jesus from a wall in a school in New Zealand is but one example of such attempts. In this case, however, the light would win the battle. The wall retained the picture.

Time is the arena where the constant cosmic battle between light and darkness is fought. This battle is also fought by Jesus, the light of the World against all forces of the darkness in his efforts to establish the Kingdom of heaven. Personally, the light of faith that a believer has received as a result of his/her encounter with Jesus calls for sharing it with others. The light of faith, however insignificant it is, becomes precious when it is placed in the right place for the advantage of all. It dispels the darkness of confusion, dejection and despondency and lights up hope in human beings. This little spark of faith also carries the ability to be a great fire that can engulf nations.

The message of the Kingdom of God, which is likened to a little lamp spread throughout the world thanks to the relentless effort of those thousands of people who dared share this light with others. They would not hide the lamp neither under a bushel basket nor under a bed, but exhibit in full view of all for all others to see.

The advantage of the light of the Kingdom of God is that it just like Jesus would lighten up the dark recesses of the society, expose the unjust and oppressive structures of the dark forces and set in motion a liberative process which will culminate in the messianic era in which the Lamb will be the lamp (Rev. 21:23).

May the light which is the lamp enable us to keep our faith ever aflame and share the light of faith with whoever we come in contact with, that the world might become a brighter place and see the light of Jesus for “In his light that we see light” (Ps 36:9).
