THE 2nd DAY IN THE OCTAVE OF CHRISTMAS – WEDNESDAY

Acts 6:8-10 ; 7:54-59

Psalm 31:3-4, 6, 8, 17

Gospel MT 10:17-22

Jesus said to his disciples: "Beware of men, for they will hand you over to courts and scourge you in their synagogues, and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake as a witness before them and the pagans. When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say. For it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

Brother will hand over brother to death, and the father his child; children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but whoever endures to the end will be saved."

The Feast of St. Stephen

“From Heaven to Earth Come”

When the song of the angels is settled

When the star in the sky is gone

When the kings and princes are at home

When the Shepherds are back with their flocks

The work of Christmas begins

To find the lost, to heal the broken, to feed the hungry

To release the prisoner, to rebuild the nations

To bring peace among brothers and sisters

To make music with their hearts

We are in the Christmas season. Relive the Christmas experience described above.

Jesus, the Emmanuel will be called “the Prince of Peace”. (Is. 9: 6)

St Stephen, the Martyr

Saint Stephen accused the Jews for four things. First of all he said to the Jews, “the Most High does not dwell in houses made with human hands (Acts. 7: 48). God has deserted the Jerusalem Temple. Secondly, he said, “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you are forever opposing the Holy Spirit” (7: 51). Thirdly “just like your ancestors persecuted the prophets, you have betrayed and murdered the Righteous One, Jesus Christ”(7:  52). Fourthly, “You are the ones who received the Law. Yet you have not kept it. (7:  53)

The Jews enraged and were furious and stoned Stephen. He prayed for forgiveness, “Lord, do not hold this sins against them” (7: 60) and died. St. Stephen is a great model for all Christians to hold on faith in this year of faith to continue to witness Christ in this modern world.
