Friday of the 3rd Week of Advent

Song of Solomon 2:8-14 or Zephaniah 3:14-18;

 Psalm 33:2-3, 11-12, 20-21;

Gospel LK 1:39-45

Mary set out in those days and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, "Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled."

Blessed

In the readings we hear about the theme emphasizing the blessedness of women. St. Luke exemplified that Elizabeth is indeed an old woman and being pregnant is next to impossible. This is the very sign given by God to Mary when her cousin Elizabeth conceived a child in her old age. He explained that, if a woman past the child bearing age could become pregnant, why should there be doubt about Mary’s pregnancy, for nothing is impossible with God

What are the specific characters of being blessed by God?

The joy of sharing to others the goodness that we received from God- Mary went in haste to her cousin Elizabeth. In life we experience being blessed and graced by God. However, there are times when we take this for granted, while it is an opportunity to prove how grateful we are to have these blessings. Blessings are meant to be shared especially for those who needed it most. Remember that it is not of our own capacity that we have these blessings. When was the last time you shared your joy to others?

The joy of being available for others- There are great abilities that people acquire, cultivate and demonstrate. In the service of God, however, there is one quality that is the greatest of all. What is it? Is it sociability? Accountability? Adaptability? Reliability? The greatest quality is availability. If we are not available to God and people, no matter what other kinds of ability we have, our ability is no good. Ability without availability is a liability. Availability means that there is a sense of preparedness and readiness. There are people in life who are prepared, but they simply are not available. Sometimes people assume God cannot use them because they do not have great abilities, special talents or gifted aptitudes. They feel they are just ordinary and do not have anything special for God’s use. But God never asks about our ability, only about our availability.

The joy of fulfilling our responsibility for the other- If we are willing to look around we can truly be humane and fulfill our own infinite responsibility for others. It was Christmas Eve. The people were busy grabbing the last minute bargains. A small girl in tattered clothes made her way through the crowd. Her name was Nelly. You will find such a girl in your city or town if you will look around. Nelly was also shopping- window shopping. She had no money and she was hungry. The twinkling lights, the colorful Christmas candles, the dazzling decorations and displays in the shop windows fascinated Nelly. As she passed the bakery with the cakes and pastries, she felt even hungrier. She paused then moved a step closer to press her little nose against the window- the pale face pinched with hunger. So Nelly was told gruffly: You there, be off. Nelly did not need a second bidding. She was frightened. She hurried through the crowd until she reached the small hut where she lived with her aged grandma. Grandma was asleep. Sleep was the only thing they did not have to buy. This was the slumber that helped them forget misfortune- being hungry, no gifts, no new clothes, and no decorations. Nelly also soon found refuge in sleep. From the distance sounded the well loved carol song.. Hark, the herald angel sing… I often ask myself, is there such a Nelly in your neighborhood with whom you can share the joys and blessings……?
